Wouldn’t we all love to hold back the years? Oestrogen, collagen and just about everything else we'd like to cling on to, seem to be slipping away from us, leaving a mark on the way we look. Sadly, there's no Dorian Gray picture in the attic to keep us looking eternally-youthful during menopause transition but there are steps we can take!

Unsurprisingly, in the quest to turn back the clock, the anti-ageing industry is booming. Every week sees the launch of new lotions, potions, tonics and treatments, each claiming to be our skin's saving grace. Unfortunately, we don’t all have bank accounts able to sustain this onslaught of solutions in a bottle. So what else can we do?

Facial yoga! A fantastic FREE, non-invasive, non-toxic option for dealing with the signs of ageing, anyone, anywhere can try. If exercising your body's muscles improves tone, the theory goes, exercising facial muscles could tone and tighten skin. This is especially welcome when gravity and menopause hormone fluctuation take their toll on our sagging skin. It’s been around for a while but facial yoga’s having a bit of a revival thanks to Meghan Markel, who’s reportedly a big fan. If it’s good in enough for Meg, then it’s good enough for Hot Flush.

These exercises are designed to work the various skin levels: the lower (hyper dermis), middle (dermis), and upper (epidermis). High resistance yoga exercises use pressure on the face muscles to stimulate a natural lift against gravity.

We've listed 7 reasons why face yoga may be the perfect natural anti-ageing face-lift.

100% Natural

It’s a 100% natural, non-invasive way of keeping skin looking and feeling younger and healthier. What better tonic for a menopausal woman suffering low self-esteem? Plus, it’s free!

Tightens & tones

Face yoga lifts, strengthens and tones all the facial muscles. Increasing the size of muscles in the face, making cheeks fuller. They also promote smoother, more supple and tighter looking skin.

Prevents wrinkles

Exercises prevent fine lines and hollows under and around the eyes and increases muscles below the eyes to help remove unwanted bags. They also take care of those wrinkles and frown lines between the eyebrows and loose saggy lines of skin on the neck.

Relieves stress

A combination of massage, acupressure and relaxation, improves blood circulation to the face, neck and scalp. Relaxes facial muscles and helpful in relieving menopause anxiety, stress and fatigue.

Nourishes skin

Facial exercise can help stimulate collagen, elastin and blood circulation in the middle levels of skin, giving the skin more oxygen and nutrients, resulting in fewer toxins & increasing the ability to absorb moisture.

Regular routine

Danielle Collins is a face yoga expert who recommends that you do anti-ageing facial exercises for 20 minutes, six times a week. OK, that may appear like over-kill, however, Danielle says you should see results fairly quickly. ‘Everyone has different faces so the time it takes to see changes varies from person to person... As a general rule, you will start to see more of a long-term improvement in your face and neck after two weeks.'

Face facts

According to a study published in the journal JAMA Dermatology (January 2018), 20 weeks of face exercises generated firmer skin, fuller upper and lower cheeks. The study’s author, dermatologist Dr Murad Alam, vice chair and professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said 'Now there is some evidence that facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of ageing…The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face'. We're just saying!

The facial exercises for the study were developed and provided by Gary Sikorski of Happy Face Yoga, who is a co-author of the study.
